Biomechanics of Foot Strike and Spatiotemporal Kinematics for Shod and Barefoot Runners

Abstract:

The influence and interaction of running condition and foot strike pattern towards the incidence of running injury currently remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the optimal combination of running condition and foot strike pattern that results in imposing lower risk of running related injuries. This can be done through the analysis of the effect in spatiotemporal variables, kinetics and kinematics for three types of foot strike patterns (Forefoot Strike, Mid Foot Strike and Rear Foot Strike) under barefoot and shod running with different midsole thickness. By using a force plate, impact characteristics and impulse were derived from the vertical ground reaction force. Motion capturing system aids the data acquisition for kinematics parameters. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA. Passive peaks were observed in both Rear Foot Strike (RFS) and Mid Foot Strike (MFS) but rather absent in Forefoot Strike (FFS). The absent of passive peak in (FFS) indicated an effective impact attenuation which reduces the risk of micro-trauma to soft tissue and bone. The better impact absorption characteristic is further emphasized in (FFS) Barefoot as a lower vertical loading rate was present. The higher stride frequency found in (FFS) Barefoot corresponded to a shorter stride length which decreases the risk for lower extremity stress fracture. In kinematics point of view,( FFS) Barefoot generated the greatest joint excursion that accommodates lower stiffness and thus a lower shock. Lower shock is said to reduce the risk of bony injuries including knee osteoarthritis. Hence, the combination of (FFS) pattern with barefoot condition provides superiority in reducing the risk of running related injuries.

Dr.M.K.A.Ahamed Khan was born in Tamil Nadu, India during the year 1961.He won the best student award for his excellence in academic and sports and also won the gold medal both in Math’s and Physics during his Pre University course awarded by the state government. He received his BE degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Government college of Technology, Coimbatore, Madras University, India and his MS degree in Electronics and Control engineering from BITS Pilani, India. He received his advanced diploma in Power electronics and drives from Lucas – Nuelle, Germany in 2002 and also his Professional Diploma in Motor Drives from Woo sun Ltd, Korea in 2014. He obtained his PhD in science and Engineering from - USA during the year 2014 and also holds his Professional Engineer Certification from IAO, USA. He is a Member in Engineers Institution Technology MIET, UK and holds his Charted Engineer certification CEng from UK .He also holds life time membership in ISTE India. He was with Rohde and Schwarz, Germany as Sales and service engineer from 1983-1987. He served as a Senior lecturer in the Faculty of engineering, Crescent Engineering College, Madras University, India for seven years and has been with the faculty of Electronics Engineering, TAFE Australia, Malaysia campus during the year 1995 to 1997. He served as a Program coordinator in the Industrial Automation and Robotics Technology Program at Malaysia France – University Nice, France between1997 to 2006 and won the Best Decorative office Room Award for the year 2002.He has been a consultant and trainer for multinational companies like Schneider electric, France. Vivendi Water supplies, France and many Malaysian, Singaporean and south east Asian companies.

He worked as an Associate Professor in the faculty of engineering at University Selangor, Malaysia from 2006 to 2017 and currently working as an adjunct visiting Professor for B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent University, Chennai. Currently he is serving as a Vice Chairman for IEEE Robotics and Automation Society [RAS] Malaysia Chapter, 2017. He served as an IEEE RAS, Malaysia chapter executive committee member during the year 2013 and won the 2013 best IEEERAS Malaysia chapter Executive member award. During the year 2014 he was nominated as the secretary for IEEERAS, Malaysia chapter and won the Best secretariat award for 2014 and also the Distinguished Service award for the consecutive years 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the IEEE RAS society. He also holds the position as an IEEE UNISEL Student branch counsellor. His current research is in the area of Power Electronics, Motor drives, Robotic and Controls.Dr.M.K.A.Ahamed Khan has so far published more than 90papers in National and International journals and conference proceedings. He is an Editorial member for International Journal of Swarm Intelligence and Evolutionary Computation, USA and also an Editorial member for Global Journal of Technology and Optimization, USA.

He has attended many international conferences throughout the world and has chaired many technical sessions. He has organized many national and international seminars, conferences and workshops. Along with many papers and research notes published in journals and conference proceedings, Dr.M.K.A.Ahamed khan has served as a Reviewer and Session Chairman for several conferences and project competitions. His main hobby is playing tennis, table tennis, cricket, travelling and reading books.
